And then we have Dotma… the prototype of female fronted gothic metal with all familiar ingredients: a nightingale as female vocalist, some bombast in their symphonic metal, broad keyboard layers, skilled neoclassical guitar solos and a sniff of medieval mysticism in the general presentation.
Dotma hails from Hyvinkää, Finland and is the realization of two young guys (guitarist Lasse Nyman and keyboarder Harri Koskela). 2005. The band was called Dragons Of The Middle Age in the beginning and at that time they wrote two songs and played some gigs. In Autumn 2007 they did their first recordings: three songs. The dragon-theme was diminished and changed into medieval fantasy stories. Now we have a new promo CD with the intention to ink a deal with a label. ‘Dances With The Shadows’ contains three songs, the bit longer (seven minutes) ‘The Cave’ speaks the most to the imagination. In Autumn 2009, Dotma will record a full length album and they hope to release it in January 2010.
I will not prevent them from doing that, since Dotma is quite a seminal band in the genre. Everything is executed in a professional manner, the production is well, Johanna Lesonen is a great singer with a full-blooded and self-assured voice, guitar solos are fine and now and then we can enjoy an acoustic, folksy part, a dark male voice or other ornaments. Of course there is nothing new under the sun, we have heard this all before. But since there are so many Within Temptation and Nightwish fans in this world, I see a serious chance that Dotma will scoop that fiercely desired contract to make their fantasy world come true at full force.
