Tempest - (2 Albums)

Genre: Heavy Metal

Line Up:

Mike Rowe - Guitars, Backing Vocals (Goliath (USA), Nineteen88)
Darren Lee - Bass
Bobby Andrews - Drums
A Coming Storm (1987)

Eye Of The Storm (1988)

This Link Includes Both Albums...!!!
Enjoy!

While vocalist Jamie "J.R." Rowe is best known for his work with Guardian and AdrianGale, he actually got his start in the late eighties with the melodic metal band Tempest.  The performance of Rowe, recognized for his gritty and raspy vocal style, is inconsistent at this early stage in his career in that he has not yet reached his potential or completely polished his act.  The guitar playing of brother Mick Rowe, who has fronted the likes of Goliath and Nineteen88, is also hit and miss.  While his lead guitar work is of very high quality on "Kids Are Gonna Rock" and "In His Name (Rock On)", on others such as “Watch Out” and “Games With God” it falls well short of the mark.  Drummer Duane Monk and bassist Steve DeAcutis round out the rhythm section.  Tempest debuted in 1987 with A Coming Storm on Pure Metal Records.
A Guardian fan must have these albums. A good start for Jamie Rowe (Guardian, AdrianGale, Lodon Calling)!

Firstryke - Just A Nightmare (1986)

Genre: Heavy metal

TRACKLIST:

01. Grab A Piece
02. No Hurry For Love
03. Just A Nightmare
04. Bound For The U.K.
05. Black Prince
06. Undermywing
07. Hand Over Fist
08. Metal Machine
09. Heavy Metal Boys

Oh, the manifold delights of this throwback release, an assortment of hopes and dreams gathered up and ruthlessly shattered on the ‘80s poverty metal rocks. Firstryke was born, lived and died in Oklahoma, opening for groups as disparate as Metallica and Dokken in the interim and leaving the world with this one gem of a recording. Everything here is hopeless and amateurish, from the dubious quotation marks in the album title to the blocky but serviceable production to the style and content of the music itself. Occasionally galloping, often chest-thumping anthemic metal filler that hardly aspired to the levels of TT Quick, much less Twisted Sister. In light of the above comments, dear reader, you’re probably bracing for a withering summation and numerical grade, but that ain’t happening today. This thing might have creaked and cracked even back in 1986 with “Bound for the U.K.'s” nostalgia for the already-bygone days of the NWOBHM seeming quaint and naive, but that innocence and enthusiasm lends character and staying power to every Maidenesque or sub-Scorpions lick and solo, every high note that makes it, every strident and cocksure lyric that revels in the simple pleasures of no-frills, headbanging-prone heavy metal. Lovingly reissued on CD for the first time by Retrospect in 2009.

Anacrusis - Screams And Whispers (1993)

Genre: Heavy Metal

TRACKLIST:

Sound The Alarm
Sense Of Will
Too Many Prophets
Release
Division
Tools Of Separation
Grateful >mp3
A Screaming Death
My Soul’s Affliction
Driven
Brotherhood
Release (Alternate Version)

With “Screams And Whispers” ANACRUSIS continued to build on the progressive Thrash sound that defined their previous album (“Manic Impressions”), and to a lesser extent the one before that, “Reason”. By the early 1990s the Thrash Metal scene was already on its last legs, but this album gave it one last much needed shot in the arm before both the band and the Thrash sound imploded gloriously. It’s a sad thing since this band always managed to put out material that was just that one step ahead of the pack.
Anyway, this album represents the highpoint of ANACRUSIS’s career. I actually still like “Manic Impressions” a tad more but this album really is the better of the two. The riffs are more intricate, the drum parts more technical, and Ken Nardi’s vocals are as varied as ever. All this cost the band’s sound a bit of catchiness, but then again these guys were never meant to sound like sing-along Thrash *coughTANKARDcough*. It really is a superb album but not a perfect one – at times the experimentation sounds forced and just plain bewildering, with tracks like “A Screaming Death” and “Driven” just being all-out bad – bogged down by excessive stop-start rhythms and all sorts of vocal idiosyncrasies. Fortunately this album also features some of the band’s best ever songs like the classic opener “Sound The Alarm” with its haunting melodies and excellent pre-chorus riffs, Division” and “Release”, a track that features one of my all-time favorite riffs. Hell, they even throw in an orchestra on “Brotherhood”! Oh yeah, they also shot a cool video for “Sound”, so look for it on Youtube sometime…
The previous album suffered a bit from a dry sound but In here the production is rich, adding an eerie (in a good way) texture to the songs. Ken Nardi has always been the lynchpin of the band and it’s the same here – if you are not moved by his unique vocals then you better check that you still have a pulse. I can’t really say much more about this album. It’s testament to this band’s ability to write intelligent music that still retains heaviness and if you love stuff like NEVERMORE then I’m sure you’ll lap this up as well. Overall this is a slightly flawed release (perhaps they were a bit too ambitious at times?) but nevertheless a very atmospheric and rewarding listen. Metal needs more bands like this. As I mentioned before, all the band’s albums can be downloaded for free at their site, so you know what to do.

Anacrusis - Manic Impressions (1991)

Genre: Heavy Metal

TRACKLIST:

Many people seem to be disillusioned by this album but they are mostly those who expected this album to be in the same vein as the band’s debut (“Suffering Hour”), and they couldn’t make peace with the fact that the band had moved away from their raw Thrash sound (which I also liked BTW) and were starting to carve their own little niche for themselves. This shift in sound was criticized back when this album dropped but over the years this album has, rightfully, come to be regarded as a milestone Progressive Thrash Metal release. Gone are the speedy sections and juvenile aggressive posturing, replaced with more considerate and intricate songwriting emphasizing strangely atonal melodies and a more varied vocal performance, all topped off with a strong Prog Metal sheen. This album will not grab you from the get go and so it will require multiple listens before its qualities will begin to shine through.
The album’s (and indeed this band’s) strongest asset is the otherworldly vocal talents of Ken Nardi. Those who are familiar with the man’s voice know what I’m talking about. He sounds quite unlike anyone else out there and his effortless shifts between harsh and rather high-pitched screams and a hypnotic clean drone absolutely rules. His fellow guitarist, Kevin Heidbreder, seems hell bent to churn out as many seemingly out of place riffs and leads as is humanly possible, while drummer Paul Miles and bassist John Emery form a solid rhythm section. “Paint A Picture” features a rather raw main riff, offset my some soulful singing and a strange yet fitting chorus. The NEW MODEL ARMY cover (“I Love The World”) is another highlight and I can confidently say that the band makes it their own. “Still Black” is one of the heaviest songs they have ever penned and I especially love its screeched chorus and very dark main riff. “Idle Hours” is a bass lover’s wet dream, while the closer, “Far Too Long” features some subtle emotional harmonies and great lyrics to boot. I could basically go on about this album for days, but suffice to say it’s an absolute classic from a much missed band.
The following album, “Screams And Whispers” is almost as good but this one has such a special and sentimental resonance that I cannot but give it the highest possible rating. Don’t mind the naysayers out there – this album deserves to be heard as it really is in a class of its own. Just about everything ‘clicks’ on here, and what a beautiful thing it is!
PS – this album, along with all their other full lengths and demos, can be downloaded at the band’s site for free, so don’t hesitate to get this one! The band needs to be awarded a public service medal for making these gems available to the public…

Anacrusis - Reason (1990)

Genre: Heavy Metal

TRACKLIST:

01. Stop Me
02. Terrified
03. Not Forgotten
04. Wrong
05. Silent Crime
06. Misshapen Intent
07. Afraid To Feel
08. Child Inside
09. Vital
10. Quick To Doubt

''Reason'' is probably the most overlooked release from Anacrusis' discography, thrashers tend to prefer the more straightforward Suffering Hour which is their debut album and admireres of more complex and prog oriented music prefer Screams and Whispers, their last album and Manic Impressions which preceded it. This doesnt mean that Reason is a lesser album, on the contrary, if a person likes both thrash metal and progressive thrash metal s/he'll probably find something to enjoy in all of Anacrusis' albums.

Anacrusis - Suffering Hour (1988)

Genre: Heavy Metal

TRACKLIST:

Present Tense

R.O.T.
Butcher's Block
A World To Gain
Frigid Bitch
Fighting Evil
The Twisted Cross
Annihilation Complete/Disemboweled
N. I. B. (Black Sabbath Cover)

Suffering Hour, the debut album from thrash metal band Anacrusis, is a pretty important album in the thrash metal genre. It's nowhere near the importance of Slayer's Reign In Blood or Metallica's Master of Puppets, but Suffering Hour is a bit of an underground classic in the thrash metal genre. Even though I am a pretty big fan of late 80's thrash metal, Suffering Hour has never really impressed me. It shows a lot of potential, but a few big problems really destroy my enjoyment of this album.
As I've mentioned earlier, this is late 80's thrash metal in the vein of Slayer or Metallica, but this never reaches the high level of quality that those bands reached in the late 80's. First of all, Suffering Hour just isn't as memorable as either of those band's masterpieces. After I finished listening to this album I can only recall a few riffs, and that's always a big problem. I have a very hard time distinguishing all of the songs from each other because of the general lack of variation and memorable sections. There are a few exceptions, but generally it's hard for me to remember every song when I'm done with the album. I wish that the arrangements would have been a bit more varied. There is a limited amount of instruments on this album, and it makes the album feel linear and uninteresting by the end.
The four musicians on this album range in terms of quality. Mike Owen's drumming is pretty good; tight and fast. Not much more I could ask from a thrash metal drummer. The bass is mostly inaudible except for a few quieter parts, and that's a big problem. The two guitarists (Kevin Heidbreder and Kenn Nardi) are pretty great and really show their chops on Suffering Hour. Unfortunately, my biggest issue with this entire album is the vocals. While they aren't terrible, every now and again Kenn Nardi will do an odd, high pitched shriek that I find extremely annoying. Listen to Twisted Cross or and you will know what I mean. It sounds a bit like a dying bird to me. Needless to say it didn't impress me very much. When he sings normally or even goes rougher, he sounds great. It's just those screams that seam to appear in all of the songs that really annoy me.
As I've mentioned, the bass is generally inaudible. This obviously means that the production isn't very good. It's pretty standard for late 80's thrash metal, but I find it insufficient. It really detracts from the overall value.

Icarus Witch - Songs For The Lost (2007)

Genre: Heavy Metal

TRACKLIST:
1   Out For Blood
2   Written In the Stars
3   Sky Is Falling, The
4   Nature Of the Beast
5   Mirror Mirror
6   Queen Of Lies
7   Devil's Hour
8   House Of Usher
9   Afterlife
10   Smoke & Mirrors

Third time is the charm. Icarus Witch blew me away with their debut EP Roses On White Lace, but despite some really good songs, their debut full-length Capture The Magic was not as good as I was hoping, and didn't quite catch fire. Finally, with surprisingly little fanfare, Icarus Witch have released a killer disc that lives up to their promise with their second full-length Songs For The Lost. Lineup changes have plagued this band, but they keep on forging themselves into a first-rate classic metal machine.
This is a heavier and darker album than Capture The Magic, with a harder-edged guitar sound and darker riffs. IW's signature broodingly mystical lyrics are in fine form, and songs like "The Sky Is Falling", "Queen Of Lies" and "Devil's Hour" are among their strongest tunes to date. Again there is not a whole lot of tempo variation between songs, and Icarus Witch never really speed up and kick your ass, nor slow way down and play doomier. They march along at their accustomed midpace, but this time it's less noticeable for some reason, and the album as a whole has a livelier feel. Part of that is the break delivered by the Def Leppard cover "Mirror, Mirror", which suits their style very well, and shows that DL used to be able to write real songs. The performances are spot on, especially the sharp guitar work of Steve Pollick and the always-charismatic vocals of wailer Matt Bizilia. I also have to note the greater prominence given to Jason Myers bass playing in the mix, giving this a much groovier, Sabbathy feel.
I have been waiting for this band to produce their masterwork, which I believe they are yet to do, but Songs For The Lost is a killer disc nevertheless, and fans of the band's previous works should know this is their best yet. Any fan of classic Heavy Metal should get this without hesitation. If they keep getting better like this, then Icarus Witch will be a name to conjure with. Highly Recommended.

Icarus Witch - Capture The Magic (2005)

Genre: Heavy Metal

TRACKLIST:

1. Storming The Castle
2. Capture The Magic
3. Soothsayer
4. Forevermore
5. The Ghost Of Xavier Holmes
6. Darklands
7. Nemeton Forest
8. Awakening The Mountain Giants
9. S.A.T.O. (Ozzy Osbourne Cover)

Pittsburgh’s Icarus Witch are a relative newcomer to the Metal world. Their brand of traditional Heavy Metal has seen the light of day on various compilations and tribute albums until the band released the Roses On White Lace E.P. in early 2005.
Late 2005′s first full-length album, Capture The Magic has been heralded in the Metal press as a return to old school Power Metal and 80s style traditional Heavy Metal akin to the likes of Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden. Icarus Witch have also been featured as indie spotlights in many online zines like Maximum Metal and have gone on to take the groundswell of support to release their CDs independently, giving the feel of the upstart NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) movement of the late 70s/early 80s.
I haven’t spent much time on this disc yet. I gave it an inaugural spin upon unwrapping it but it went to the pile to await further review. So far so good, Storming The Castle gets the metalfest started in fine fashion. I can recommend these guys based on the excellent E.P., I’ve had it since it first came out and it still gets spins. Fans of good true Heavy Metal should enjoy this.

Guitarist Jurgen R. Blackmore is the half German son of Iconic rock guitarist Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow). "Still Holding On" is his debut album recorded during 1990 subsequently released in 1993. This album is also the recording debut of renowned German AOR/H.Rock vocalist Michael Bormann (ex "Jaded Heart", Rain, "Redrum", Solo). The lineup is completed by bass player Mike Matthes, drummer Wolfgang Beisel and key player Malte Rathke.
This album is nothing less than a true underground Hard Rock milestone. Jurgen demonstrates significant abilities in terms of performance and compositions that go far beyond typical hard rock while Michael Bormann lays down what could be considered his best ever vocal performance. This album features ultra heavy (for 90s era) guitar riffs followed by choruses with shocking backing vocals. These elements are constant throughout the album which features extra fast HR tracks such as "Wild and Free", "Running Alone", "Day By Day" and "Miracle" as well as melodic diamonds in "Nothing Burns Forever", "Don't Walk Away", "Show me the way to go", "Never too Late".
To be perfectly honest, I bought this album under the perception of it being just another Bormann project. After playing this to say I was surprised would be an understatement.
If you consider buying a classic album this month pick this one and you will be hit by a barrage of devastating hard rock. This album is qualified to shoot the listener's adrenaline through the roof!

His next band move also found him playing with Powell, this time in Rainbow. He stayed with them for a time, then moved on to Ozzy Osbourne's group (having performed with Ozzy previously as a guest on the Never Say Die album by Black Sabbath). He stayed with that group for several years before hooking up with Jethro Tull in 1987. He left the band the following year, to work on various projects over the next few years.

This Christmas-inspired album was released in the United Kingdom in October, 2006 and in the United States on November 7, 2006. The cover artwork for this album, painted by Karsten Topelmann, is an adaptation of a street in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, in line with the band's heavy Renaissance influence. The same street is portraited in the cover of Blackmore's Night's second studio album, Under a Violet Moon. In the cover of "Winter Carols" the street is painted as winter time, whereas Under a Violet Moon's cover takes place on apparently a summer night.

Apocrypha - The Forgotten Scroll (1987)

TRACKLIST:
THIS IS A 320 KLBS CD-RIP!!!

Released in 1987, The Forgotten Scroll was the debut album by Apocrypha, who released a trio of very solid power/thrash metal albums in the late 80's. It was released on the Shrapnel label, so you know there is going to be plenty of guitar wizardry on the album, courtesy of shred artist Tony Friedanelli (who later would join Third Eye Blind of all bands).

Apocrypha - The Eyes Of Time (1988)

TRACKLIST:

 1. Father Time
2. West World
3. Twilight Of Modern Man
4. Alexander the King
5. Day Time Stood Stil
6. Hour Glass
7. H.G. Wells
8. Man Who Saw Tommorrow
9. Mystic

1988's The Eyes of Time was the second album by Apocrypha, who released a string of very solid power/thrash metal albums in the late 1980's. It was released on the Shrapnel label, so you know there is going to be plenty of guitar wizardry on the album, courtesy of shred artist Tony Friedanelli (who later would join Third Eye Blind of all bands). The album features some great (if a bit high at times) vocals, high speed riffing, and sci-fi/fantasy-themed lyrics, all of which help give Apocrypha a sound that is equal parts Helstar, Crimson Glory, Malmsteen, and Vicious Rumors.

Apocrypha - Area 54 (1990)

TRACKLIST:

1) Terrors Holding On To You
2) Catch 22
3) A Night In Fog
4) The Power Elite
5) Instrubation #3
6) Area 54
7) Tian'Anmen Square
8) The Detriment Of Man
9) Refuse The Offer That You Can't Refuse
10) Born To This World

1990's Area 54 was the third (and final) album from Apocrypha, who released a string of very solid power metal albums along the lines of Helstar and Malice. It was released on the Shrapnel label, so you know there is going to be plenty of guitar wizardry on the album (hence songs like the appropriately-titled "Instrubation #3").

=========================================================================
Like numerous bands signed by California's Shrapnel label, Las Vegas-based Apocrypha were short on songs but long on showy guitar playing. Formed by singer Steve Plocica, guitarist Tony Fredianelli, bassist Al Rumley, and drummer Mike Poe, Apocrypha released three shred-intensive heavy metal albums: 1987's The Forgotten Scroll, 1988's The Eyes of Time (having added rhythm guitarist Chip Chrovian), and 1990's Area 54 (with a new rhythm section of bassist Breck Smith and drummer Dave Schiller). All of these were reliably heavy, if rather mediocre in terms of songwriting, and were distinguished by Plocica's operatic screams (often reminiscent of Queensrÿche's Geoff Tate) and, of course, Fredianelli's positively blinding fretwork.
Needless to say, Apocrypha's career died along with the age of guitar heroes, but Fredianelli continues to perform in many capacities and a variety of styles. Following his 1993 debut as a solo artist (named Breakneck Speed, naturally), he worked as a session player on Run-D.M.C.'s Crown Royal LP, and, most recently, became a member of alternative rockers Third Eye Blind.
