1990:Günter Maier, Alex Hilzensauer and Herb Greisberger founded a band whose musical spectrum ranged from blues and rock'n'roll to complex instrumental songs.
In the following two years the band strove to find an adequate and suitable singer.
In the meantime they released an album with the title "Scenes Of Fire" under the name Big Heat.
In 1994 the band finally found the right front man in the form of Ritchie Krenmaier and recorded "Grand Ominous Dreams" a year later.
1996: The band renamed itself Stigmata producing a demo with the same title. The CD "Solum Mente Infirmis" was recorded in the same year opening the way to a label for the quartet.
At the end of 1997 "Greed Machine" appeared on the Rock Hard sampler of "Best Unsigned Bands" and the beginning of 1998 "Solum Mente Infirmis" was released world-wide by "Noise Records".
With these new conditions "Stigmata" finally received the recognition that they deserved from the European press: Record of the month, Newcomer of the month and the unanimous vote of the press through excellent reviews. Shortly after the release of this album the band was forced to add the appendage IV to it's name due to the already existing rights on the name Stigmata by another band.
In April/May 1998 Stigmata IV completed an extensive European tour with Virgin Steele and Riot including performances in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Benelux countries, Italy and Greece.
Subsequently the band started recording in the "Big Apple Studio", Salzburg, and under the direction of Günter Maier produced the album "The Court Of Eternity" which was released in November later that year.
The press reaction was once again overwhelming and unanimous including the second place in the "RockHard" sound check.
In the same year the band went on tour in Italy and Austria with Blind Guardian.
1999: There followed many extremely successful concerts including a tour with Stratovarius in Italy, Greece as well as Austria which finally established Stigmata IV as THE Austrian metal band.
In the southern European countries the band was greeted more than enthusiastically by the audiences and first class concert reviews confirmed their "Live Killer" qualities once again.
In the summer of 1999 after gigs and festivals with bands such as Manowar and Overkill the band proceeded with the recording of their current album, Phobia, in the Big Apple Studio.
Autumn 1999: The band had to part with it's name due to a court ruling.
STYGMA IV the new band name brings with it Phobia the most mature work to date.
Ritchie Krenmaier's dark lyrics on the theme of phobia and the emotional melody lines harmonise perfectly with the tight rhythm section of Herb Greisberger and Alex Hilzensauer, the virtuoso guitar playing of Günter Maier and the tastefully arranged keyboard sounds.
They remain faithful to the melodious, strong and orchestral arranged metal style without repeating themselves or sounding monotonous.
STYGMA IV's strength lies in their ability to be versatile without losing their aim or sounding tasteless.
Whether driving tempi, or progressive, or balladesque - to cut things short - STYGMA IV stands for everything that a metal album needs.
The all too important recognition factor has been expanded.
In addition you will find Andrew Lloyd Webber's Overture and Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar as well as 22 Acacia Avenue from Iron Maiden as bonus track, three compositions from other people appearing on Phobia as a sign of respect for these artists and their work.
Above all, the versatility of the four musicians from STYGMA IV crowns the album.
Undoubtly, the most interesting highlight througout the year 2001 has been STYGMA IV''s performance at the WACKEN OPEN AIR - an excellent performance not only discussed by the media!
Just after having celebrated their comeback as an astonishing live act STYGMA IV started recording their new album The Human Twilight Zone - the fourth regular album; described as the hardest output in the history of STYGMA IV; the 16 minutes long track "sleep" is an opus completely throughcomposed in a classical conceptional way.
RITCHIE KRENMAIER's lyrics once more deal with abysses in human life, the dark sides of war, hatred and unability to love. These expressive words are combined with hard guitar parts as well as with emotional instrumental passages.
Right after signing the band for his french label NTS, Olivier Garnier called the band to france for opening the ANGRA / SILENT FORCE tour 2002.
Playing in big places in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans STYGMA IV changed into a live-killing-machine.
Under the influence of this concerts the band writes new material and records the new preproduction / part1 for the next album.
The reactions are more than overwhelming, but STYGMA IV will be careful and take time with the decision for a new label.
The next big thing are the recordings for a livealbum on the 9th of november 2002 in their hometown Salzburg.
STYGMA IV's "a history in pain - LIVE" will be released in april 2003.
APRIL 2003: STYGMA IV are signing an europeanwide recorddeal at the french NTS label.
At the same time "a history in pain - LIVE" is released.
On the 1st of may 2003 STYGMA IV are starting with the recordings for the new studioCD.
2004: STYGMA IV release their fifth regular studioalbum "Hell Within" europeanwide.
2005: The HELL WITHIN tour takes the band through germany with the fabulous supportband 44 Freaks.
It’s the first time that STYGMA IV is playing headliner shows and the band is able to play a "best of" program which shows all musical periods of STYGMA IV.
After 11 years of performing in the same constellation STYGMA IV decide to finish their career due to personal problems.

Nuclear Blast is to be commended for continuing to produce this series of 'taster' albums. This being the third instalment of the Metal Dreams series listeners are starting to hear some of the same bands again but that's no bad thing. The advantage of Nuclear Blast putting out these discs periodically is that you can get a sample of newer product by a bunch of bands and they're also great for lending to friends so they too can acquire some knowledge of new bands in the Nuclear Blast stable.
A quick look at the track listing will let you know if you might be interested, names such as Hammerfall, Stratovarius, Iced Earth, Lacuna Coil, Nevermore and Opeth being fairly well known amongst the metal fraternity. It should be pointed out that these Metal Dreams albums generally showcase the mellower songs of many of these bands so anyone planning on throwing one of these discs on and having their ears blown off may be disappointed.
However sometimes it's these mellower tunes that show a bands ability to change gears and play with some feeling and restraint, so it's not always a bad idea to listen with open ears to such songs.
If you can pick this up cheaply it's a very good purchase. I can't rate it over three stars only because various artists albums invariably come off sounding like projects and your always going to get a number of turds amongst the gems and this album is no exception. But that's what the skip button is for!

Metal Dreams Vol. 2 (2001)

TRACKLIST:

1.      STRATOVARIOUS - Neon Light Child
2.     ICED EARTH - I Died For You
3.     SINNER - Destiny
4.     HELLOWEEN - Forever And One (Neverland)
5.     SKID ROW - 18 life
6.     NIGHTWISH - Sleeping sun
7.     BLIND GUARDIAN - Nightfall
8.     STEEL PROPHET - Earth & sky
9.     LACRIMOSA - The Turning Point
10.     MR.BIG - To be With You
11.     SONATA ARCTICA - Replica
12.     TO/DIE/FOR - Lacrimanum
13.     LOVE LIKE BLOOD - Remember
14.     GOTTHARD - Let It Rain
15.     BONFIRE - Goodnight Amanda
16.     MACBETH - Moonlight Caress

Well, it very well could be. Nuclear Blast really have something special with their Metal Dreams compilation series, which should come as no surprise, as the NB label practically specializes in good compilations (see Beauty in Darkness and Death Is Just the Beginning). This album, however, focuses on the lighter side of metal, offering 16 ballads spanning the genres of power metal, gothic metal and melodic rock. I will offer a brief review of each song:
1. STRATOVARIUS - "Neon Light Child". This song appeared on the Hunting HIgh & Low CD-single as a b-side, I believe from the Infinite album. It's still a decent song, not a great opener though.
2. ICED EARTH - "I Died For You". This track is absolutely killer. One of their best ballads, from the classic album Dark Saga, the vocals in this track are beautiful, and are accompanied by some nice metal riffs.
3. SINNER - "Destiny". Starts off with a nice synthesizer intro, and then the song stays heavy until the vocals come in. The song is a tad long, but it's still pretty good overall.
4. HELLOWEEN - "Forever and One (Neverland)". Probably my favorite song off the album, from one of power metal's greatest bands. This is such a beautiful ballad, the chorus is just superb. The singing during the chorus is amazing.
5. SKID ROW - "18 and Life". OK, what are they doing on here??? Oh well, it's still a good song, i wouldn't necessarily call it dreamy, and it seems out of place, but I like it.
6. NIGHTWISH - "Sleeping Sun". This song is absolutely incredible. One of their greatest ballads, originally a bonus track off of the Oceanborn album. Tarja's voice is that of a goddess, and there's a beautiful solo near the end.
7. BLIND GUARDIAN - "Nightfall". The goodness continues with this excellent song off of the Tolkien-inspired Nightfall in Middle-Earth. The chorus is simply reason enough to hit the replay button.
8. STEEL PROPHET - "Earth & Sky". Probably the worst track off the CD, which is a shame, because it would have been great if not for the terrible off-key vocals. I won't dwell on it, listen for yourself.
9. LACRIMOSA - "The Turning Point". I believe this was the only song off of Elodia that was sung in English. It's a very good song, the female vocals sound a bit rough at places, but the orchestra in the background more than makes up for it.
10. MR. BIG - "To Be With You". Hmm... I really wonder who's idea it was to include them on here, seeing as they are obviously NOT metal, but oh well... It's still a damn good song, simple, but good.
11. SONATA ARCTICA - "Replica". Very good ballad, taken from their debut Ecliptica. Has a brilliant, energetic chorus and a killer solo later in the song.
12. TO/DIE/FOR - "Lacrimarum". Awesome goth-metal! The female vocals in this song are brilliant, and it almost has an 80's vibe to it. What a wonderful song, it fits the album cover well.
13. LOVE LIKE BLOOD - "Remember". Eh, it's OK. Would have been good if the male vocals weren't so annoying at times. I don't think the production was very good either.
14. GOTTHARD - "Let It Rain". A melodic rock outfit from...somewhere in Europe. If you're more into metal, this probably won't be your cup of tea, but if you like laid-back bluesy rock ballads, you'll probably love this song.
15. BONFIRE - "Goodnight Amanda". I liked this song a lot more than I thought I would. Though you probably haven't heard of this band, they've been around for quite awhile. But anyways, this is a beautiful ballad, probably my 2nd favorite song off the CD.
16. MACBETH - "Moonlight Caress". This is that OTHER goth-metal band from Italy. They're nothing like Lacuna Coil though. They mix Dimmu Borgir-ish vocals with melodic female singing. This ballad, taken off their Romantic Tragedy's Crescendo debut, only features the female vocals and keyboards. It's a very nice, chilling closer to the album. The lyrics are pretty good too.
Well, that wraps that up. I would highly recommend this compilation to those who are interested in discovering new bands, as well as those who like good rock ballads. In addition to this, I would recommend the other four installments in the Metal Dreams series.

After APHRODITE’S CHILD, VANGELIS and SOCRATES during the Seventies, Greece is once again waking up to Progressive rock. The leading band of this new generation, LA TULIPE NOIRE is a classically composed quintet. This talented line-up performs a refined and quiet progressive rock that develops baroque and solemn melodies. Singer IMA's clear and pure vocals can remind of that of Virginia ASTLEY. K. SAVVIDES's guitar sounds like David GILMOUR's whereas ALIX's keyboards weave quiet layers that marvellously complete precious and melancholic themes. As for the rhythm section, assured by drummer Nick KASSAVETIS and bassist HYDE, it is definitely solid. Leaving somehow aside the MARILLION inherited influences, "Faded Leaves" (2002) could develop an original sound, while keeping the assets that made the success of their album "In The Gates Of Dream" (1996) and "Shattered Image" (1999). Quickly pick this rare flower, it will nicely decorate your secret garden devoted to Progressive rock... Many artists in the Progressive rock sphere borrowed from HOMER's "The Odyssey", quite particularly in this beginning of the New Millennium. But who else could pay a better tribute to the most famous epic of Antiquity but a Greek outfit ? LA TULIPE NOIRE thus took the challenge on the basis of contemporary writer Konstantinos KAVAFIS' writings, particularly his poem entitled "Ihtaca". This results in "Nostimon Hemar" (2006), a concept-album lasting about 70 minutes and respecting the canons of typical Progressive rock as MARILLION or PENDRAGON established them. Standing on this basis, the musicians put all their personality and originality in these eleven pieces, achieving a really successful result.

Son Of A Bitch - Victim You (1996)

What happens when you take three former members of Saxon, and put them together with Thunderhead singer Ted Bullet? Well, it sounds like a pretty good idea on paper at least, but I honestly did not hear a single note before I picked this disc up.
With that being said, this CD exceeds all of my expectations.
Victim You is like two CD’s in one. The band sounds veryRRRsmall5 much like Saxon on a few songs, and then have a sound more reminiscent of late 80’s pop metal. Bottomline, hair metal fans will LOVE this disc! After giving this disc a couple more complete listens, I would compare the band’s sound as a cross between Dokken and a little bit of Krokus.
This style of metal was about as popular in 1996, as peanut butter and tofu sandwiches, but former Saxonites Peter Gill, Steve Dawson, and Graham Oliver forged ahead anyway. Sadly, this disc went largely unnoticed when it was released. It took 12 years for me to discover it, but I find it to be a great undiscovered piece of music.
Ted Bullet has a vocal style that falls somewhere between Paul Stanley from KISS, and Biff Byford from Saxon. His voice is melodic yet raspy enough to give these tunes here a harder edge. The superb guitar work of Haydn Conway and Graham Oliver is a pleasure to hear. Lots of George Lynch like solos are all over this record!
There isn’t one song on this disc that I do not enjoy. Copies of this disc can be found for less than $10.00 and it is worth every penny. Check it out!

If one chooses to investigate this strong debut from Warlock, think the heaviest of the Scorpions, or about par with Accept in terms of whomp. A great kick off to one of those unsungs, Burning The Witches is a crunchy metal feast for the ears, and a good foreshadowing of much exciting wallop to follow. Pre-power metal at it's finest, a traditional metal fan would be much pleased with the sonic might this album emits.
